Three-Way Catalytic Converter (TWC)
Definition:
The three-way catalytic converter is a post-treatment device installed in the automobile exhaust system, which is mainly used to reduce harmful substances in the exhaust gas (such as carbon monoxide CO, hydrocarbon HC and nitrogen oxide NOx). By catalyzing the reaction, the three-way catalytic converter converts these harmful substances into harmless carbon dioxide (CO2), water (H2O) and nitrogen (N2).

1. Shell:
Material: Usually made of stainless steel, with good high temperature and corrosion resistance.
Action: Protect the internal components from external mechanical damage and environmental effects, ensuring stable operation of the catalytic converter at high temperatures and pressures.
2. Substrate:
Materials: Common carrier materials include honeycomb ceramics (such as cordierite, silicon carbide) and metallic materials (such as stainless steel).
Structure: The carrier is usually designed as a honeycomb structure to increase the surface area of the catalyst and improve the catalytic efficiency.
Action: Provides the support structure of the catalyst to ensure that the exhaust gas can be uniformly passed through the catalyst coating to achieve an efficient catalytic reaction.
3. Catalyst Coating:
Materials: Catalysts are typically composed of precious metals (e.g., platinum Pt, palladium Pd, Rhodium Rh) that are precisely sprayed onto the support.
Action: At high temperatures, the catalyst can accelerate the REDOX reaction of harmful substances in the exhaust gas, converting CO, HC and NOx into harmless substances.
Coating technology: The catalyst coating usually uses advanced spray technology to ensure uniform coating distribution and improve catalytic efficiency and durability.
4. Thermal Insulation Layer:
Material: The insulation layer is usually made of high temperature ceramic fiber or insulation felt.
Action: Reduce heat loss inside the catalyst, ensuring that the catalyst operates within the optimal operating temperature range, while protecting the housing from high temperatures.
5. Sealing Gasket:
Materials: Gaskets are usually made of high temperature and heat resistant materials, such as graphite, ceramic fibers, etc.
Action: Ensure the sealing between the catalytic converter and the exhaust pipe to prevent the leakage of high-temperature exhaust gas.

The installation position of the three-way catalytic converter
1. After the exhaust manifold: the three-way catalytic converter is directly connected to the exhaust manifold outlet of the engine and is the first key component of the exhaust system.
2. High temperature area: Use the heat of the engine exhaust (usually at 300°C-800°C) to activate the catalyst and accelerate the conversion of harmful gases.
3. Close to the engine compartment: most models arrange it in the engine compartment or the front of the chassis to facilitate the use of high-temperature exhaust gas.

(1) Gasoline vehicles
• Application: All gasoline vehicles that meet strict emission standards such as National VI and Euro VI are required to be equipped with three-way catalytic converters.
• Technical requirements:
GPF (Gasoline particle Catcher) + three-way catalytic converter dual purification system is required for national six models.
(2) Diesel vehicles
• Application range:
Euro 6 / Country 6 diesel vehicles need to be equipped with a three-way catalytic converter + DPF (particle catcher) combination.
Diesel catalytic converters need to withstand higher temperatures (around 500°C-700°C) and particulate impact.
3. Industrial sector
Generator set:
Diesel generators need to be equipped with three-way catalytic converters to meet environmental protection emission requirements (such as standby power supply for hospitals and data centers).
Non-road machinery:
Tractors and construction machinery (such as excavators) are gradually installed to comply with international standards such as Tier 4 Final.
