The hip joint is the main joint in the human leg. It is a ball-and-socket shape in which the spherical head at the upper end of the femur fits into the concave socket of the pelvic bone.
Hip replacement surgery is indicated for people who have hip pain and stiffness that cannot be improved with medication. Hip replacement surgery involves removing the damaged part of the joint and replacing it with a metal or non-metal hip implant. The implant stem is inserted into the upper femur. The damaged cartilage is removed and replaced with a metal or ceramic socket lined with a plastic cup to simulate the original hip joint movement for normal movement.
After hip replacement surgery, avoid bumps, strenuous exercise and falls. Rehabilitation requires light exercises to improve hip strength and flexibility. Patients are generally able to resume light activities 6 weeks after surgery.
