TDB Mohs hardness picks

Hardness pencil make hardness testing a more precise process - especially when testing small specimens or mineral grains within a rock. The point of the pick can easily be placed on the part of the specimen that you want to test. The scratches that you make or trails of metal that are left behind are usually very easy to distinguish.
Like use a pencil on the hand, with the ground into a 45 degree angle. Then, with the same pressure as writing, drag the point over the surface of the specimen. Hardness is judged by the depth of the scratch.
Hardness range
Mohs: 2-3 Testing for the soft floor.
Mohs: 3-5 Testing for the middle soft floor.
Mohs: 5-7 Testing for the hard floor.
Mohs: 7-9 Testing for the very hard floor.

An alternative to using the reference minerals for testing is a set of "hardness picks." These picks have sharp metal points that you can use for very accurate testing. The picks allow much more control, and their sharp points can be used to test small mineral grains in a rock.
The sharp picks can be used easily and either produce a scratch if they are harder than the specimen being tested or leave behinda tiny streak of metal if they are softer. Examine the test site with a hand lens to see the results of your test.
We have used hardness picks and think that they do a great job. They are easier to use and more accurate than testing with specimens. They can be resharpened when they dull.
