CORROSION RESISTANCE:
316L Stainless Steel Rod
- With enhanced chromium and molybdenum content, 316L stainless steel rods offer superior corrosion resistance, surpassing 304 in diverse atmospheric and corrosive environments.
and molybdenum content. - However, exposure to warm chloride environments may lead to pitting, crevice corrosion, and stress corrosion cracking above 122°F (50°C).
- This grade is considered resistant to potable water containing up to 1000mg/L chlorides at ambient temperatures, which reduces to about 500mg/L at
140°F (60°C). - Although often referred to as the 'marine grade stainless steel,' it is not resistant to warm sea water conditions.
HEAT RESISTANCE:
- Exhibiting excellent oxidation resistance, 316L stainless steel performs well up to 1600°F (870°C) in intermittent service and 1700°F (925°C) in continuous service.
- Grade 316L offers superior resistance to carbide precipitation.
WELDING CHARACTERISTICS:
- With exceptional weldability by all standard fusion methods, 316L stainless steel can be welded both with and without filler metals.
- For Grade 316, heavy welded sections require post-weld annealing to achieve optimal corrosion resistance, a step unnecessary for 316L.
HEAT TREATMENT:
- The recommended annealing temperature range is between 1900°F and 2100°F (1038°C to 1149°C).
- 316L stainless steel cannot be hardened through heat treatment.
- It is essential to account for its higher thermal expansion coefficient to prevent warping and distortion.
PROCESSING - HOT FORMING:
- Most producers suggest a maximum forging temperature between 2100°F and 2300°F
- Forging should not commence below 1700°F (927°C). The best corrosion resistance is achieved with a final anneal.
- Corrosion resistance is obtained if the forgings are given a final anneal.
PROCESSING - COLD FORMING:
- 316/316L stainless steel rods, known for their toughness and ductility, are readily cold worked through methods like roll forming, swaging, cold heading, and deep drawing.
bent, etc., without difficulty - Severely cold-formed parts should undergo annealing to relieve stresses.
MACHINEABILITY:
- Due to its toughness, Type 316/316L stainless steel rods are more challenging to machine compared to Type 304.
- 316/316L produces chips that are tough and robust.
- Using chip breakers and curlers is recommended.
- Opt for large tools and ample cutting fluids.
- Consider heavy positive feeds at low speeds since 316/316L work hardens rapidly.
